As a dog trainer, I have always enjoyed the process of getting to know my clients.. not just their dogs. I love hearing their stories, learning more about their lifestyle, and helping them develop an amazing relationship with their pet while at the same time, getting to know them on a more personal level. I love dogs. But I love people, too!
When I started my photography journey, I initially photographed a lot of dogs, but over time I realized that what I really loved was the connection I was making with people through my work with them. I started photographing more people and found such joy in capturing authentic moments. But it was one woman in particular who gave the idea for Be Seen. She answered a model call and offered to wear some outfits from my closet client. She invited her beautiful daughter to join as well.
During the session, she shared more about herself and a tragedy that I was unaware of prior to photographing her. That's when I realized that I want to do more than just photograph someone. I want to get to know a bit of who they are - the things that have shaped them, what they love, what makes them feel strong or beautiful or vulnerable - and then bring some of that to life through my photos. I want to create something centered around being seen for more than just how you look.
So I guess the project is really a combination of two things I love: connecting with people and creating something beautiful. I don't want the camera to simply record what someone looks like. I want the portraits to say something about who they are.
Once I had the idea, I had to see if anyone would be interested. I had to find a way to reach women in my community. So I made a post on some Facebook moms groups and hoped I would have a handful of women that might be interested in sharing their story, sharing themselves and trusting me to photograph them. I still can't believe the number of women that reached out. The response has been deeply moving. And although I know I won't have the time or ability to photograph everyone, I know that the most important aspect of this project is getting to know each other.
I can't wait to continue this journey.
